For our March event, we were so excited to bring back one of our most requested member events, Speed Networking.
As professionals, we all know that it’s a big world out there, and who you know may be everything in terms of finding a new job, climbing the corporate ladder, or simply learning more about your own industry. This evening was meant to communicate the importance of networking, to learn some tips on how to network effectively, and obviously, to network, network, network!
The event was held at the chic V Lounge located above Earls Restaurant in Yaletown. As members arrived, they enjoyed the fabulous wine and beer offerings as well as the complimentary appetizers and cheese plates that V generously provided. Members had half an hour to mingle, drink and eat before the speed networking session began.
For the night’s speaker, we called on Vancouver’s expert in networking, a born relationship builder, and an awe-inspiring mom, wife and communications professional, Melissa Carr. Melissa is the founder of The Thirties Grind, a lifestyle blog that includes series like Married With Children, the REAL Real House Wives of Vancouver, and Vancouver Real Estate (i.e., Are you F%*#ing Kidding Me?). Melissa has worked as an Event and Marketing Planner at Robson Square – University of British Columbia – and most recently is the Principal of Spit it Out! Communications. Melissa started the evening off right with a funny, real and inspiring talk about networking, which at one point brought about strategies and similarities between dating and networking. Our members had the opportunity to participate and offer up their best dating tips and how they relate to networking.
Beyond the laughs, Melissa offered up some very applicable advice and points to think about:
- Start with the “who, what, where, when, why and how”. If you find a pause in the conversation, refer back and see if you have answered these.
- Be authentic.
- What do you want and what are your values?
- Network while thinking about how you can help someone else.
- Be the best iteration of who you are and put your best foot forward.
As Melissa finished her talk, members found their seats and the Speed Networking began. Members got to chat for 75 minutes before the committee ended the evening by announcing the winner of the fabulous jewelry door prize (congratulations Jennifer Scott!). Although the evening flew by, it was clear that members had a fabulous time getting to know one another and some real connections were made. All of the members received a detailed Members Bio document which included a list of attendees and their bios – perfect for follow-ups.
The event was a huge success for members and for raising proceeds to donate to Dress for Success Vancouver. The YES team thanks V Lounge for offering up such an amazing space, Melissa Carr for her valuable and impactful words, and to Adina for providing the stylish door prize for one lucky member!
Our next event is set for April 9. Stay tuned for more details coming later this week!
